Heart and Soul a concert for JACQUI McCOY (GEIA) : Jacqui McCoy Geia, an arts manager with a formidable social conscience, died in late February after a long illness. On Friday June 1st, musicians and dancers from around Australia shared the stage at the Corner Hotel to commemorate her inspirational work in the Australian creative arts industry. Monies raised will go towards establishing a grant category in Jacqui’s name and assist her family. Jacqui saw how the visual and performing arts could be powerful vehicles for social change. She was commited to supporting young artists and assisted hundreds of artists to travel Australia and the world. She was a great encourager and connector, bringing people together from different backgrounds, streams of the Arts, faiths and generations. She played a vital role in connecting U2 and Midnight Oil to the The Sea of Hands in Melbourne, Nelson Mandela’s visit to Melbourne, benefits concerts for East Timor, West Papua, Yorta Yorta, Jabiluka, and so many other causes and artists. She helped hundreds of artists like Joe Geia, No Fixed Address, Warumpi Band, Bapu Mamoos, Gabriel Possum, Shane Howard, Public Enemy, Archie Roach. The list is long and so much of what she did was done pro bono. Jacqui was a Project Manager, Tour Manager, Grant Administrator, Executive Producer of CDs and Films, Events Co-Ordinator, Arts & Policy Consultant, Curator, Fund Raiser, Indigenous Employment Facilitator, Submission Writer, Director of the Victorian Rock Foundation, the Melbourne Music Festival, The Williamstown Music Festival, to name but a few.
